The Wachtelberg – Mühlbachtal nature reserve:
Welcome to the world of the common pasque flower
The ‘Wachtelberg – Mühlbachtal’ nature reserve is one of the oldest protected areas in Germany. As early as 1911, the rocky summit of the Wachtelberg was designated a natural monument in order to protect the last natural occurrence of the common pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) in Saxony. In 1992, the nature reserve was extended to include the Mühlbach valley.
In addition to the semi-arid grasslands, the rocky porphyry summit of the Wachtelberg and the temporary small bodies of water in the old quarries, the fallow fields and wet meadows in the near-natural Mühlbach valley provide a wide range of habitats for rare and protected animal and plant species. Parts of the nature reserve are grazed to protect the calcareous grasslands from scrub encroachment.
